A Message from Our Founder - Sandy Becker

I have had the pleasure of working with and learning from young children since 1982. I began as a student teacher in high school working with a group of preschool aged children in the campus classroom, student teaching in two second grade classrooms in an elementary school and experiencing a 10 week internship student teaching a first grade class of hearing impaired children at a state school in central New York which was by far my favorite experience. I have always loved teaching. I received my AAS in Early Childhood Education and have taught preschool in several locations up & down the east coast for many years. Through my years of experiences I have formulated my idea of high quality programming for young children from seeing some really great programs but more importantly from experiencing some not so great programs. It is through these stretching and growing periods of your life you are able to move forward with accurateness, focus, and clear vision. My vision has always been to create a school where peace, quality and extended family exist. Montessori is that peace and quality, Briarwood is that extended family.

Parent Testimony, June 2009

Dear Sandy,

Over 12 years of providing early intervention services to young children in their day cares and schools, I have seen the range of what Southern Maine has to offer its children and families. There were places I couldn’t breathe for the smells, or sit down for the filth. There were places I couldn’t hear for the noise of providers yelling and children crying, and couldn’t bear the sight of the show given to trusting families at drop off or pick up times. In contrast, I have also seen places where love and nurturing do occur alongside a healthy care environment. But when it came time to choose who could would care for my boys, I agonized over the decision. Who could my husband and I trust? Who could provide a positive physical, emotional, and enriching environment? Who could make sound decisions for the overall well-being of the most precious beings in our life? You and your program were our answer …… and you far exceed our expectations.

At Briarwood, your program is not the best part. It’s the heart that is present in everything you and your staff do. Montessori is a wonderful fit for our boys, but it is the sense of family we experience whether within your doors or away. Someone has ALWAYS made themselves available to assist with anything we’ve needed, and true love for our children is evident. Changes over the years will happen for us all, but your commitment to your life’s dream of Briarwood is a constant I have faith in. If we have to give our children to someone to care for when we can’t, we hand them to you with no reservations. From the depth of our hearts, thank you for the partnership in raising my children.
